What Is Wood Panelling?

Wood panelling is a cladding made from timber boards and used on walls, ceilings and floors indoors or outdoors. With its natural wood grain and attractive appearance, it is the choice of those who want to bring warmth and a natural feel to a space. Made from durable species such as pine, oak and spruce, wood panelling is ideal for anyone seeking a natural look in their decor.

Panelling and Flooring

In Turkey, panelling, log-profile panelling and flooring are generally produced from Scots pine, Turkish red pine, black pine and spruce. The facilities that make them are usually set up as a dedicated section of a sawmill. Wood looks more attractive and warmer than other materials, and because it insulates against heat, it makes for a healthy floor. It also offers good sound insulation and provides long-lasting interior and exterior finishes.

Choosing Logs for Panelling

Logs used for panelling and flooring must be of good quality; knotty logs can also be used provided they are sound. Yield is low from small-diameter logs, the ideal diameter for pine and spruce is 25–35 cm.

Panelling and flooring cut from logs with wide annual rings may shrink and swell considerably as humidity changes. Logs for panelling and flooring should therefore be straight, full and free of spiral grain.

Spruce

Oriental spruce, which covers 2% of Turkey's forest area, is a highly valuable species growing at 1,200–2,400 m on the seaward slopes of the coastal mountains of northeastern Anatolia. Norway spruce is found across Northern and Central Europe, western Russia and the Urals. There is no colour difference between sapwood and heartwood; the wood is yellowish white.

Trade names: Ladin, Spruce, Norway Spruce (Eng.), Gemeine Fichte (Ger.), Épicéa (Fr.), Avrupa Ladini (Tr.).

Working Properties

Easy to work and peel, with good nail- and screw-holding. It glues well, takes stain, and paints and varnishes well. It dries quickly and well with little tendency to crack. With its even texture and straight grain, it splits easily.

Applications

Mainly used in interior carpentry and joinery, boxes and crates, musical instruments, utility poles and mine props, packaging and pulpwood, and in the production of plywood and ship masts.

Other Species

Sitka spruce, white spruce, Engelmann spruce and Siberian spruce.
